Head south from Jackson Hole and all traces of a cosmopolitan life disappear. Just after Hoback Junction the Snake River Canyon emerges and winds 35 miles to Alpine, Wyoming. More elk than people descend to the region in the winter at the Game and Fish feed ground two miles south of Alpine.

Alpine has spunk, witnessed in the summer Mountain Days Festival which draws visitors from afar and received national recognition from the Food Network for the Dutch Oven Cook-off. All of this is to say that if you don’t find it in Alpine, you can create it.
